The history of this fabric goes back to the 19th century in a place called Chirala, in coastal Andhra Pradesh. However in 1950 that Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, then the chairperson of the All India Handicrafts Board, guided the weavers to translate the Telia designs into sarees.
